Men's Volleyball Pick Up a Sweeping First Win Over Drew

MADISON, N.J. - Men's Volleyball picks up their first win of the season with a sweep over the Rangers of Drew University. 

The Pride improve to 1-2 and remain 0-0 in conference play. 

BY THE NUMBERS 

  • Matthew Christ had an outstanding performance, leading Widener with 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .538, while also contributing 7 digs and 2 blocks. 

  • Josh Matchett facilitated the offense effectively with 32 assists, adding 5 digs, 2 blocks, and a hitting percentage of .625. 

  • Michael Martino was a key contributor with 10 kills, 3 service aces, and a total of 13.5 points, showcasing strong all-around play. 

  • Stephen Marquis played a solid match, recording 4 kills, 3 blocks, and 1 service ace, contributing 6.5 points overall. 

  • Christian Wannamaker made his mark with 4 kills, 2 blocks, and 3 service aces, tallying 8 points in the match. 

  • Widener showcased strong team defense, with 30 digs collectively, including 8 from Kevin Stubbs and 5 from Matchett. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The opening set was a tightly contested battle featuring 14 ties and 4 lead changes. Widener pulled ahead early thanks to a service run by Michael Martino, which included three consecutive service aces, putting them up 7-1. Drew fought back, tying the set at 27-27, but Matthew Christ sealed the set with a critical kill, assisted by Josh Matchett, followed by a block from Michael Martino and Stephen Marquis to close it out. 

  • Widener controlled the second set from the start, building an early lead with a balanced offensive attack led by Matthew Christ and Michael Martino, who combined for key kills during a 6-1 run. The defense stepped up as Stephen Marquis and Anioma Njokanma contributed to four team blocks in the set. A kill from Josh Matchett, assisted by Martino, and a service ace by Christian Wannamaker helped Widener maintain a comfortable margin and take the set convincingly. 

  • In the final set, Widener's offense surged with Matthew Christ leading the way, notching several kills during an 8-2 run that broke open a close set. Josh Matchett continued to dominate as a playmaker, delivering precise assists to Christ and Michael Martino. Drew attempted to rally late, but Christian Wannamaker's service ace and a kill by Stephen Marquis, assisted by Matchett, ensured Widener closed out the match in straight sets.

The Pride will continue their road trip as they head to Wilkes-Barre, Pa to take on the 1-5 Colonels of Wilkes University. First serve is Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 7:30pm.
