Robinson and Koita Down Widener Records; Women’s Track & Field Split Meets

NEW YORK, N.Y. & WEST POINT, N.Y. – Two Widener Women's Track and Field records fall for a combined 40 years of history at Spartan Invitational.
 
SPARTAN INVITATIONAL
 
Mariam Koita opened in the 60-meter dash where she led Maria Muzzarelli, Jayla Gore, and Alyssa Kolimaga. Koita clocked in a 7.95 while Muzzarelli ran a 7.96. Both qualified for regionals. Gore ran in a 8.28 while Kolimaga finished the group out with a 8.39.
 
Koita's 200-meter dash would show a new Widener record with a 25.48 and a regional qualification time. Muzzarelli ran a season opener 27.02. Zahara Simmons' first meet of the year resulted in a 28.32. Kolimaga finished just behind in a 28.34.
 
Kayla Robinson's 60-meter hurdles showed a 9.67 while Simmons put up a best 9.81.
 
Robinson's triple jump distance of 11.69-meters downed a 32-year-old record from hall of fame member Debbie Smuda. Robinson moved onto qualify for regionals with her jump. In the shot put, a throw of 12.53-meters also qualified her for regionals.
 
WEST POINT OPEN
 
Emma Schultz opened her new year with a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a 1:03.13.
 
Liz Egan and Erin O'Brien raced to a 6th and 15th place finish in the 800-meter run. Egan led with a 2:30.61 while O'Brien ran in a 2:52.57. The two continued in the mile with Egan clocking a season opener 5:26.45. O'Brien started her season with a 6:13.20.
 
In the 3000-meter run, Loralei Golembiewski led Kathryn Long to a 2-3 finish. Golembiewski clocked a personal best 10:40.02. Long would do the same with her 10:45.15.

Widener returns to the track on Saturday, Jan. 18 for the Alvernia Invite in Reading, Pa.
