Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Widener Field Hockey Battles to the Very End but Falls Short

A Fourth Quarter Score was the Difference Between Winning and Losing

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Widener Field Hockey falls 0-1 in a defensive battle against Washington College.

The Pride drop to 1-2 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Olivia Deysher would lead the team with three shots, two being on goal.

  • Abby Blake saved five of the six shots she faced.

  • As a team, the Pride had eight shots on goal to the Shorewomen's six.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Pride found themselves in a defensive bind to begin, allowing five penalty corners in the first quarter yet surrendering no points. The three Shorewomen shots wouldn't find the goal, and both teams would finish the quarter scoreless.

  • The second quarter was also defensive, as the Pride took three shots to the Shorewomen's one, none of them leading to scores. Widener improved by not allowing a corner this quarter, and drawing one of their own, but both teams would remain scoreless heading into halftime.

  • The third quarter would see more aggression from both teams, with eleven shots beating the previous two quarters' combined total. Both teams' defense continued to shine however as none of these shots would lead to goals. Shots by Alex Quartapella and Olvia Deysher would be saved and blocked to end another scoreless quarter heading into the fourth.

  • Washington College would come out and score early in the fourth quarter off a penalty corner as Widener would trail 0-1. The Pride would fight hard to tie the game, but ultimately would fall short as they would take a 0-1 loss.
