Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss of 2024

The Pride Were Unable to Survive Falling Behind Early

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Widener Men's Soccer suffered its first loss of the season against Virginia Wesleyan Marlins. 

The Pride are now 1-1-1 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play. 

BY THE NUMBERS 

· The Pride had 3 shots (3 on goal). The Marlins had 17 shots (12 on goal). 

· Nikos Deliargyris scored the only goal of the game for Widener. 

· Widener had one corner kick compared to five from Virginia Wesleyan. 

· Ryan Van Pelt had eight saves in goal. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

· The Marlins started the scoring at the 15:55 mark fighting through the Pride defense to take the early lead. Virginia Wesleyan would tack on another goal at the 29:00 mark to take a two to noting lead. The Pride would not go quietly though as Nikos Deliargyris put The Pride on the board at 30:28. The Marlins would answer back quickly, scoring their third goal of the evening at 30:28. 

· After conceding three goals in the first half, Widener settled in during the second half. The pride were able to hold off The Marlins offense until eventually they broke through for their fourth goal at the 73:00-minute mark. Widener continued fighting but were unable to put more points on the board.  

· There were three yellow cards given during the match, one to Widener and two to Virginia Wesleyan.  

UP NEXT 

The Pride will travel to Newport News, Va. To take on Christopher Newport on September 7th. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
