NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Widener Men's Soccer lost a tightly contested battle between the Christopher Newport University Captains.
The Pride are now 1-2-1 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
· The Pride had 12 shots (6 on goal). The Marlins had 18 shots (4 on goal).
· Sean Fatiga scored the lone goal of the game.
· John Axtman had one assist.
· Ryan Van Pelt had two saves in goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· The first half of play saw both The Pride and The Captains play outstanding defense. Christopher Newport was able to put six shots on goal in the first half, but The Widener defense was able to subdue the offensive attack leading to zero goals in the first half for the Captains. The Pride offense was unable to capitalize though, as their three shots in the first half all missed the mark leading to a zero-to-zero tie going into the half.
· After a defensive clinic in the first half, The Captains struck first with a goal at the 50:47 mark. The Pride would answer back at the 58:17 mark as Sean Fatiga scored the tying goal with an assist from John Axtman. The rest of the half saw both sides play outstanding defense until the 85:27-minute mark where Christopher Newport scored the game winning goal.
· There was one yellow card during the match on Christopher Newport.

The Pride will be back home on Wednesday, September 11th to take on Penn State Brandywine. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
