Football Falls in Final Minutes of Play to King’s

Second half groove gave Pride momentum

WILKES BARRE, Pa. – Widener football led a second half comeback but falls short on the final drive against King's.

The Pride's 28-25 loss move them to 2-2 in the regular season and 2-1 in MAC play.

OF NOTE
  • Head Athletic Training AJ Duffy, III was celebrated by King's Athletics' Staff during the game.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pride lead with 23 first downs throughout the 60 minutes of play and netted 242 passing yards with 419 total offensive yards.
  • Quarterback Michael Caloiaro led the Pride on offense with 157 yards of passing and a touchdown.
  • Bryce Casey would score a touchdown with 125 yards on the ground.
  • In the air, Zack Vanscovich led with five receptions for 96 total yards.
  • Dan Ficca would lead the defense with a season high 11 tackles.
  • Ryan Pattison went 2-of-2 on point after attempts and tacked on a field goal in the second.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride strike first on the very first offensive play with a 75-yard Jeff Chaplin pass to Jordan Baxter. The momentum kept to the Pride's side as defense held the Monarchs to a three and out with tackles from Nate Brown and Ficca. A long drive from the Pride at the 13:13 minute mark would chew a good portion of the clock. Just outside the WID20, the Pride would see a Khylil Jones rush and a Chaplin rush to escape Widener territory. AJ Celona would punt the ball away, pinning the Monarchs at their own 16-yard line.
  • To open the second quarter, the Monarchs answered with a touchdown but another long drive from the Pride would be answered right back with a Pattison field goal. In the series, Dalton Wickel would pick up a quick 11 yards on the ground as Casey added another 30 on the ground to move the chains. The Pride offense would end the half with a long drive to flip the field as Caloiaro connected a 59-yard pass to Vanscovich before heading into the locker room.
  • Out of halftime, the Monarchs led a 10-minute drive to push the score to 21-10. In the clock chewing series, Jacob Kopelman, Elijah Benton, and Ficca would pick up a handful of tackles. The Pride offense would take over the rest of the quarter with gains from Wickel on the ground and Caloiaro in the air.
  • The fourth quarter would begin to favor the Pride as Caloiaro connected a short pass to the right to Malachi Holmes for an 18-yard touchdown. Vanscovich helped tack on a two-point conversion to make the score 21-18 in favor of the Moncarchs. The next series, the Monarchs answered but the Pride offense was set up well with an extra 15 tacked on for an unsportsmanlike conduct call. Casey converted a 7-yard rush to punch in a score. The score was 28-25 Monarchs. A quick three and out for the Pride defense would set up a crazy finish as the Pride would end with a last play effort to take the lead. The final from Wilkes Barre, Pa. was 28-25.
