CHESTER, Pa. – A low scoring Widener Football stalemate at Hirschmann Field ends in a frustrating defeat in 2024 campaign.
The 10-3 loss moves the Pride to 2-3 in the regular season and 2-2 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- A quarterback battle was split between Michael Caloiaro and Jeff Chaplin with nearly identical passing yards. Chaplin threw for a long of 42.
- On the ground, Eli Warfel would run a 55-yard season long on four attempts.
- Jaelen Richardson snagged a long of 41 yards and held on for 67 total passing yards on two attempts.
- Defensively, Jacob Kopelman stuffed the Mustangs offense with nine total tackles Boston Blake added a 9-yard sack.
- The Pride would net 159 total offensive yards and be a perfect 1-for-1 on fourth down conversions.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The 60-minute battle began with a quick Mustangs possession from their own 32-yard line. Joshua Salter would deny a first down by snagging an interception to flip possession. The Blue and Gold capitalize on great field position on the Mustangs half of the field. Bryce Casey would rush for six yards before Dalton Wickel moved the chains. Ryan Pattison would drill a 35-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The remainder of the quarter was a back and forth battle. To end the quarter, Blake would drop the quarterback back nine yards after help from Elijah Benton and Dan Ficca on previous plays.
- A slow offensive series for the Pride resulted in a change of possession at the 12:48 minute mark. The proceeding series would chew nearly 13 minutes of clock Luke Shaeffer and Nate Brown would pick up at least three tackles a piece. The Pride headed into the locker room down 7-3.
- Out of half, the Pride would begin with the pigskin with a few Kareem McCoy rushes. Jack Wisniewski would pin the Mustangs inside their 20. A quick three and out from the Mustang offense gave the ball back to the Pride as Caloiaro had the Pride driving with a Richardson 26-yard grab. Following an interception, the Pride defense butt heads to force another quick three and out. A 42-yard catch and run from Chaplin to Richardson would be overturned by a review on the field to half any momentum swing. Benton and Shaeffer continued to pick up tackles as the quarter ended 7-3.
- With 15-minutes to play the tensions were high. Kopelman would rack of some tackles and help the defense hold the Mustangs to three. A Chaplin drive began to rise as a pass interference call gave the Pride a fresh set of downs. The Mustangs would chew four minutes of clock to setup a Wisniewski punt that would be muffed at the STE50. The Pride couldn't catch a break as the ball was recovered by the Mustangs. A strong defensive series would give the ball back to the Blue and Gold with just under two remaining. The game would end 10-3 in favor of the Mustangs.
