Pick-Six Seals the Deal on Widener Football Home Opener Over Albright

Pride drop two TDs in fourth quarter

CHESTER, Pa. – Salter and Pride drop a pick-six and 400 yards of total offense in Widener Football win over Albright.
 
The Pride's shutout 21-0 win moves them to 2-1 in the regular season and 2-0 in MAC play.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jeff Chaplin led the Pride on offense with 117 passing yards. Michael Caloiaro added a perfect completion rate with a deep 54-yard pass.
  • On the ground, Bryce Casey dominated the ball with 14 carries for 142 yards and a touchdown.
  • Malachi Holmes would add a solo catch for 54 yards.
  • Defensively, Dan Ficca would lead with eight tackles while Jalen Walker registered three and a half sacks.
  • The Pride would dominate on offense with 429 total offensive yards with eight sacks for 54 yards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride open on Hirschmann Field with a coin toss win. On the first series, the Pride would force a quick three with three Ficca tackles and a Ryan Wilson double. A slow first quarter for both sides would result in the longest Widener drive beginning at the 12:14 mark with Casey rushing for a 22-yard gain. The first quarter would end scoreless.
  • To open the second, Chaplin would tack on 50 yards of passing with balls to Jalen Richardson and Devin Ahmed. The Pride defense would hold strong with an Anthony Schiller 22-yard sack. An offensive drive beginning just under five minutes would put the Pride on the board. On a first and 10 at the WID4 would be shortly changed with a 61-yard Casey rush. The two-minute warning would give the Pride a chance to draw a play as Casey punched in a 2-yard touchdown. The Pride would head into halftime with a 7-0 lead.
  • Out of halftime, the Pride would receive the ball to open. Dalton Wickel would be credited with a 20-yard run down the middle while adding another 18-yard gain later in the series before having to punt away the ball. The Albright 2:45 series would get the defense off the field quickly as Machai Stinnett would break up a pass to bring up third and 10. Salter would add a break up the next play to force fourth down. The quarter ended with both sides scoreless.
  • The Pride defense got off the field once again as Albright would miss a 42-yard field goal. The next series the Pride would march down the field. Holmes' only catch of the day would be a 54-yard catch and run to put the Blue and Gold on the ALB16. A no huddle shotgun run by quarterback Eli Warfel gave the Pride a 14-0 lead. The very next series, Salter would add a 46-yard pick-six touchdown to put the Pride up 21. The defense closed out the game with double Walker sacks.

Widener hits the road next Saturday, Sep. 28 to Wilkes Barre, Pa. to take on King's. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
