Women's Volleyball Makes Quick Work of the Goucher Gophers

The Pride Have Now Won Four Straight

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Women's Volleyball keeps their win streak going with a sweep over the Gophers of Goucher College.

The Pride improve to 7-4 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Lilyanna Martucci had another stellar performance, leading the team with 10 kills and four service aces.

  • Abigail Herrin was efficient with her hitting, racking up seven kills on a .778 hitting percentage.

  • Meghan Prior had a great outing with her passing, finishing with a team-best 15 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Campbell Chronister's assist and ace would kick things off for the Pride as they started 5-3 in the first set. Both teams began trading points, until Widener ripped off 11 straight points led by Azira Benjamin and Martucci to set Schwartz on fire and take a 20-8 lead. Goucher would score a bit to close the gap, but a Gopher error would give the Pride a 25-14 win.

  • Liz Barnes would lead the way to start the second set, as her ace and assist would help the Pride start up 4-2. The teams would trade scores for a bit until Widener would go on another massive run, this time for 10 points led by Herrin's kills and Martucci's aces, as the team would take a 16-6 lead. The Pride would finish the set with a 7-2 run and Isabella Ricevuto's kill from Chronister would hand Widener a 25-12 win.

  • The third set began very close, as neither team could gain much of a lead early. Martucci and Benjamin again led the team with strong hitting, and Kristen Vacca's kill would spark an 11-3 run to give the Pride a 21-14 lead. With the Pride up late, Mira Canali's back-to-back aces would complete the sweep and give the team a 25-16 victory.
