CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Men's Soccer falls in a tightly contested battle against the Swarthmore College Garnet.
The Pride fall to 2-3-1 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
· The Pride had 11 shots (3 on goal). The Garnet had 13 shots (7 on goal).
· Will Cole scored the only goal of the game for Widener.
· Bryan Gaviria and
Ryan Van Pelt were credited with the assist.
· Ryan Van Pelt had five saves in goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· The first thirty minutes of play saw outstanding defense played by both The Pride and The Garnet. The first team to break through in this defensive battle was Swarthmore as they scored the first goal of the match at the 31:46 mark. Widener did not wait long to answer back as
Will Cole scored the game tying goal at 32:15 with an assist from
Bryan Gaviria and
Ryan Van Pelt. The game would return to a defensive battle and go into the half tied one to one.
· The second half of play would be remarkably similar to the first with both teams struggling to get anything going offensively. The Pride would put five shots on goal in the second half but two were saved and the other three went wide of the net. The garnet put seven shots on goal in the second half and were finally able to break through with their final shot of the game at the 83:11 mark giving Swarthmore the victory.
