Widener Women's Volleyball Falls in Final Puerto Rico Match

Defense Was Concerning as the Pride Recorded No Blocks

SAN JUAN, Pr. – Widener Women's Volleyball loses the final game of their Puerto Rico trip to North Park.

The Pride fall to 1-2 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Azira Benjamin has found her stride hitting, leading the team again in kills with seven.

  • Liz Barnes was sure handed with receiving, totaling 22 digs on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams began the first set trading points, as Lilyanna Martucci's kill would tie the score at 3 each. Kills by Abigail Herrin and Azira Benjamin would spark a four-point run, but the Vikings would respond with a 2-9 run to surge ahead 11-16. Alex Verchio's kill would close the score to 14-17, but a 2-6 Viking run would extend the lead and put the Pride down 16-23. Martucci would score on a service ace, but back-to-back Widener errors would have them fall 18-25.

  • Both teams would go on early runs in the second, as the Vikings would start with a 1-4 start and the Pride would respond scoring six of seven straight to set the score at 9-7. Late in the set, a massive 1-9 North Park run would see them run away with the lead at 14-21. A Martucci kill and some Viking errors would close the score, but a North Park kill would seal the second set as the Pride would lose 18-25.

  • North Park would start off hot in the third set despite kills from Benjamin and Herrin as they would jump out to an early 4-7 lead. Chronister's service ace would cut the lead to two, but a 2-7 Viking run would give them some breathing room as the Pride would trail 9-16. Another four straight points from the Vikings would see the Pride down 11-22, and despite trading scores a North Park kill would end the set and match with a score of 13-25.
