SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO. - Widener Women's Volleyball splits in their opening tri-match as they beat Buffalo State before falling to Ohio Wesleyan.Â
The Pride move to 1-1 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play.Â

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST BUFFALO STATEÂ

Both teams came out a bit rusty, as errors would lead to a 3-3 start. A 1-3 Buffalo State run would see them gain the lead, and the teams would trade scores as the Pride stayed close but trailing. Abigail Herrin would lead the defense, blocking to keep the score close, but an attack error from Widener would see them fall 19-25 in the first set.Â

Blocks by Toomey and kills by Kristen Vacca would headline the start of the second set as the Pride would jump to an early 6-2 lead. The Bengals would fight their way back, but Azira Benjamin would catch fire, blocking and killing for the Pride as she and Chronister's passing would keep the team ahead. Tied at 18, two Widener aces would lead the team to match point at 24-21; and a Liz Barnes to Lilyanna Martucci kill would seal the set 25-21.Â

Errors would again show their head to start the third set as the score would be tied at 5 early. Both teams would trade scores again, with the Pride led by Martucci's blocks and kills, but again the game would be tied late at 18 each. Herrin would explode for five straight kills to take a 23-21 lead, and a Chronister to Toomey kill would finish off the set 25-23.Â

The final set was a battle as both teams went back and forth scoring and Martucci and Toomey led the team. No team went up more than one score as the game was tied at 12. Martucci and Verchio's kills would see Widener pull ahead at 14-13, and a Bengal attack error would give the Pride their first win of the season as they would win 15-13 in five sets.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST OHIO WESLEYANÂ

The Battling Bishops would come out hot, scoring five straight before the Pride could get a point and getting an early 2-7 lead. Blocks by Toomey and Verchio would will the Pride to a comeback, but a 2-6 Bishop run would see them up 10-17. Herrin again would impress with her hitting, but a Bishop ace would sink the Pride 17-25.Â

The second set would go like the first, as two 4-0 Ohio Wesleyan runs would see Widener down 6-14. Herrin's ace would give the Pride some life, but a 1-9 run would ultimately see Widener fall again 10-25.Â

The third set would start much closer, as a 4-0 Pride run led by Chronister and Mira Canali blocks would tie the game at 8-8. The teams would trade 2-point runs until a 1-5 run from Ohio Wesleyan run would see Widener down 16-22. The Pride would bring it back with a 3-1 run, but a service error would hand the Battling Bishops a 20-25 win.Â
