CHESTER, Pa. – In a crucial MAC Commonwealth game, the Widener Men's Lacrosse team fell in a tough battle against Eastern.
The 16-4 loss puts the Pride at 4-11 in the regular season and 3-3 in MAC Commonwealth play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Leading the Pride on attack was Wesley Sporer with two goals on nine shots.
- Sporer would lead with two assists as well.
- Defensively, Chris Covington would lead with three caused turnovers.
- Keegan Billie racked up 11 saves in the cage.
- The Pride would outshoot the Eagles 45-44 while winning 14 faceoffs to Eagles nine.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A fast-attacking Pride offense opened the game with a quick Matthew Shingle faceoff win. In the first five minutes the Pride would rattle off shots from Matt Ellison, Colin Wingate, and Matt Buckley. A slow defensive battle started for the majority of the quarter. Bryant Maits put the Pride on the board at the 2:33 mark as their shots final fell. A back and forth final two minutes would result in the Pride being down 3-1 at the end of one.
- Right out the gate in the second, Nick Brennan would cause a turnover to try and get the offense going. Maits and Sporer would then take shots that would fall wide and high. The Pride defensive game would begin to hold the score low. Billie would stand tall in the cage with a few saves to head into an attacking Pride run. Maits would take two shots that were blocked but at the 1:34 minute mark Wingate would find the back of the cage. The Pride would head into halftime down 8-2.
- Another slower start to the quarter would fall on the Pride. Billie would continue his save string with back-to-back saves around the eight-minute mark. Sporer would put the Blue and Gold on the board in the third with a goal at 6:52 remaining. Heading into the final minute of play, the Pride forced a clock violation and head into the fourth 11-3.
- The Pride would struggle in the fourth with shots falling even though the Buckley and Jimmy Knepp would take shots. More shots would fall around the nine-minute mark from Maits and Brennan. The only Pride goal of the quarter happened with 2:45 left from Sporer to put the team at four. At the end of 60 minutes the Pride fell 16-4.
