GRANTHAM, Pa. – An under the lights game at Messiah would give Widener Men's Lacrosse their first conference loss.
The 16-7 loss puts the Pride at 4-9 in the regular season and 3-1 in MAC Commonwealth play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Wesley Sporer led the Pride with a pair of goals.
- The remainder of goals were scored by five Pride players.
- Defensively, Jacob Shannon would cause two turnovers and scoop four ground balls.
- In the cage, Keegan Billie made 16 saves.
- The Pride would take 33 shots and scoop season high 54 ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Pride would open the shooting game early with a Matthew Shingle faceoff win and a Sporer wide shot. With 10:34 on the board, Matt Horgan scored the first Pride goal to tie the game at one. Shingle came away with another faceoff win to give Chris Covington a shot. Billie kept the Falcons at two for the majority of the quarter with a handful of saves. Nick Brennan would tie the game once more at two with 1:24 remaining. The Pride would head into the second down 3-2.
- To open the second, the Pride would play the penalty kill game and successfully hold the Falcons scoreless. Offensively, the Pride slowed and would rattle shots that wouldn't fall. At the 4:48 mark, Nicholas Knepp put the Blue and Gold on the board for the second to make the score 4-3 Falcons. Sporer would tie the game at four with 2:40. The offensive game turned hot with Sporer's second goal to take the lead heading into half.
- Out of halftime, the Pride looked to continue their hot streak with a Matthew Shingle goal at 14:11. A string of eight minutes would be quiet for the Pride as offensive shots wouldn't fall. Defensively, the Pride would begin to struggle as the Falcons would go on a 4-0 run to take the lead. Colin Wingate would end the scoring drought with a goal after a good clear attempt. At the end of three, the Pride were down 11-7.
- With 15 minutes left the Pride looked to put a game plan together and close out the game with a win. Matt Buckley and Sporer looked to continue their shots as they rattled off shots. A goal late in the quarter would force the Pride to take a timeout to try and slow the fast attacking Falcons. The Pride would end the fourth scoreless and see their first conference loss with the final score 16-7.
