Men’s Lacrosse Downs Gwynedd Mercy to Earn First Season Win on Hirschmann Field

Sporer shoots 6-of-9 for four goals

CHESTER, Pa. – Another rainy night at Quick Stadium for Widener Men's Lacrosse as they earn their first win of the season against Gwynedd Mercy.

The Pride's 18-9 win moves them to 1-5 in the season with the first MAC Commonwealth game set for early April.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Wesley Sporer led the Pride with four goals for a season high.
  • Matt Buckley and Bryant Maits come home with three apiece.
  • Matt Shingle scooped 10 ground balls.
  • Defensively, Austin Angradi created four turnovers.
  • In the cage, Keegan Billie made 10 saves.
  • The Pride outshot the Griffins 52-34 and won 20 faceoffs to their 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Griffins forced a timeout, the Pride bounced back with a quick goal following a successful clear. Luke Pollick would take a rip that would see net with Sporer tacking onto the score seconds later. A few more shots would rattle off from the Pride offense as the defense began to settle in. A fast-attacking Griffins' offense would cause minor issues as they would take a 6-2 lead just under seven-minute mark. The Pride would answer with Matt Horgan, Buckley, and Bryant Maits goals to end the quarter down 6-5.
  • Beginning the second quarter, Maits would tie the game at six after another good clear. From the 4:29 minute mark of the first, the Pride offense would lock it in and go on a 9-0 run into the third. The Blue and Gold would hold the Griffins to a scoreless quarter leading into half. Sporer added a goal to his four with 9:15 left to take the lead while Matt Ellison scored one for himself. Billie kept the attacking Griffins out with back-to-back saves. Jimmy Knepp sent the Pride into halftime with a 10-6 lead.
  • Opening the second half was another Shingle faceoff win. The Griffins would end the Pride scoring run at the 12:27 mark. Sporer answered right back with a goal after a Shingle facoff win. The Pride rattled off shots and force Griffins' turnovers. In the final minutes of the third Horgan added another goal while Pollick cashed in on a goal for his stats.
  • The fatigue began to set in as the high scoring offense slowed. The Pride defense stood strong to hold the Griffins to no goals in the fourth. Buckley and Maits continued their scoring run with goals just over the 11-minute mark. Billie's work in the cage kept the Griffins shots out as Cam Hazel's shot let saw net for the final scoring of the evening.
