Four Pride players see two goals

CHESTER, Pa. – A six goal third quarter put the Widener Men's Lacrosse back in the game but fell to Haverford at Quick Stadium.

The 16-12 loss puts the Pride at 0-3 in the season.

BY THE NUMBERS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride's first goal game at the 4:48 mark of the first quarter with a Nicholas Knepp behind the back pass to Matt Horgan. Horgan's goal cut the lead to 2-1. After a successful Ford shot clock kill would turn the ball over and give the Pride an offensive run. A successful clear for the Pride gave Matthew Marino a goal scoring opportunity to tie the game with three minutes remaining. The first quarter would end with the Pride down 3-2.
  • A rainy second quarter for the Pride would to be troublesome. With shots from seven shots coming from the Pride offense and seven ground balls, a good transition from the defensive zone gave a scoring opportunity. With 47 seconds, Bryant Maits scored an unassisted goal. Maits would mark his first togal of the season. Heading into half the Pride were down 12-3.
  • Out of halftime a quick faceoff win from Caiden Shaffer and a ground ball from Liam Drake put some energy in the Pride as he ran through the Fords' defense to score on the first possession. A faceoff violation for the Fords gave another chance as N. Knepp would take a shot that would be saved. Matt Buckley would rip a shot that would nail the post and drop in front of Maits as he would scoop a ground ball. Maits would put a shot that found the back of the cage with 9:27 left in the period. Wesley Sporer would answer the Maits' goal with his first of the game. The Pride's stride was found as Buckley found the back of the net to force a Fords' timeout with 7:26 remaining. The goals continued to pour in as N. Knepp's shot was good on a man-down possession. The score was 15-8 Fords. A good save from Keegan Billie would give Liam Montgomery a ground ball to draw a pushing penalty. The Pride continued to ride the wave as Marino forced a Fords turnover from the goalie to cut the deficit to six. The Pride would go on a 6-3 run in the third and outshoot the Fords 17 to 11.
  • Right out the period break, a stylish behind the back goal from Horgan put the Pride within five from a Sporer pass with 13:44 left in the game. A Billie save would keep the Fords out of the net to allow the defense to reset. The waters would settle with six minutes remaining in the game as the Fords' penalty kill would help. Out of offsetting penalties, Buckley took a shot that found the back of the cage with a Cam Hazel assist with 4:49 left. The game would end with a Pride penalty kill to lead into a N. Knepp goal with three seconds left. The final score was 16-12.
