CHESTER, Pa. – Despite a tough loss to the Eastern University Eagles in the MAC Commonwealth Championship, Widener men's basketball is dancing yet again in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year.
The Pride will be a host site for a four-team pod for the first two rounds. Hobart will play Christopher Newport, who won the national championship last season, on Friday, March 1 at 5:10 p.m. The Pride will play afterward, facing Roger Williams at 7:40 p.m. Saturday's March 2 7:40 p.m. game will feature the winners of the Friday evening games.
Tournament information can be found on the information link to the right. Per the NCAA, adult tickets will be $15 and seniors will be $10. Widener students will have free admission to the game. Tickets will be sold at the door with no presale occurring. All games hosted at Widener will be broadcast on the Widener Athletics Digital Network and live statistics will be provided throughout the tournament.
Widener enters this year's tournament with a 23-4 (12-2 MAC Commonwealth) record. The Pride have been seen on the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll for 10 straight weeks, going as low as #22 and as high as #13. Throughout the season, Widener defeated multiple ranked teams and receiving-votes teams at the time of the games, including DeSales, Swarthmore, and Carthage.
Roger Williams is 14-14 (8-8 Commonwealth Coast Conference). The Hawks were slightly better on the road (8-7) than at home (6-7). After three losses in a row to end the regular season, Roger Williams won all three of their CCC playoff games. They won the CCC Championship at home over Suffolk 79-76 for their first conference title since 1999.
The matchup between Widener men's basketball and Roger Williams will be the first game played between the two schools.
The winner of this game will play on Saturday, March 2 at 7:40 p.m. and will face either Christopher Newport or Hobart in the Second Round.
