Men's Lacrosse Falls Just Short to Shenandoah Hornets

Seven Different Pride Players Scored on Saturday

WINCHESTER, Va. – Even though Widener men's lacrosse had a three-goal lead in the third quarter, they lost to the Shenandoah University Hornets 13-12 on Saturday.

The Pride are 0-2 in the regular season. Their first MAC game is on Saturday, April 6 vs. Alvernia.

BY THE NUMBERS HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SHENANDOAH
  • Shenandoah won the opening face-off. The Pride were aggressive early on, and it eventually turned into three consecutive goals. Haverstrom scored two of the three, the latter of which was a man-up goal. Later in the quarter, a Widener penalty immediately led to the Hornets' initial score. All four goals by Shenandoah came after a Widener penalty. The Hornets scored four in a row before Haverstrom knocked in a shot on a Matt Horgan dime with six seconds left. The score was 4-4 through one.
  • Although Widener picked up a cross-check penalty in the first two minutes of the second quarter, Billie made sure none of Shenandoah's shots went in. Buckley scored an unassisted goal at 10:19 following a successful clear. Billie continued his good defense, and the offense repaid the favor with two more goals. In the waning moments of the half, the Hornets countered with a goal off a turnover from the visitors. Billie made one more save before the quarter expired, and the Pride led 7-5 at the half.
  • Shenandoah took a quick shot to start the third quarter, which was stopped by Billie. The Pride played good defense, despite the barrage of Hornets' shots. At 10:10, the Hornets cashed in on a man-up goal after a Widener unnecessary roughness penalty. The Pride would pick up three of the next four scores. They all came from a different player. Through three, Widener had a 10-7 lead.
  • After winning the face-off, the Hornets got past Billie for their eighth goal. Although Cam Hazel scored at 12:02, the momentum then went in favor of Shenandoah. The Hornets scored three straight goals in 19 seconds to tie the game 11-11. The Pride won the next face-off and, with two shot attempts, got a goal from Wesley Sporer. With a one-goal lead, both teams saw a turnover before Widener received a penalty for an illegal body check. The Hornets answered with back-to-back scores. The Pride would not recover, and the final score was 13-12.
