WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Widener Men's Volleyball see themselves on the right and wrong side of two sweeps as they split in their first tri-match of the year.
The Pride move to 4-4 in the 2024 season.
BY THE NUMBERS

Matthew Christ was a killing machine in the matches, finishing with a team-high 20 kills (7 and 13 respectively) between the two games. He also had five block assists and two service aces.

Josh Matchett had another great night passing. He had 27 assists in game one and 33 in game two, also totaling seven kills, five block assists, and a solo block.

Game two saw three players hit 1.000 percent, most notably Christian Wannamaker, who went 5/5.

Widener out-killed Wells 44-14.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST WILKES

The first set saw the two teams battling hard with neither going up more than two throughout the entire set. With Widener up 20-18, a 6-1 Wilkes run puts them up 24-21, and a service error sinks the Pride 22-25.

Wilkes jumps out fast in the second set, going up 10-4. The Pride respond with a 5-2 run to make the score 9-12, and the two trade blows down the stretch. Up 20-16, Wilkes opens the lead with a 4-0 run and despite a kill from Wannamaker, Wilkes would respond to hand Widener a 25-17 loss.

Both teams go on a 3-0 run early as the teams tie at 4 early. The teams continue to trade scores until Wilkes again goes on a run, this time 8-2, as the Pride trail 11-16. Despite a 4-0 run by the Pride late in the set, Wilkes completes the set and match with a kill as the Pride falls 22-25.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST WELLS

Widener came into the second game with a chip on their shoulder, going up 19-5 on kills from Ethan Cox and Matthew Christ. Wells would fight to come back a bit, but back-to-back kills from Cox and Christ again would see the Pride take the first set 25-10.

The second set saw more depth get in for the Pride, and they'd go up 5-0 early. They would go on another run as they'd score three in a row, all assisted by Matchet. Wells would go on a 4-0 run but Widener would respond with another 3-0 run of their own. Wells would go on an impressive 5-1 run, but a Pride 9-2 run would end the match, capped off by a service ace by Michael Martino. The Pride would win set two 25-19.

The Pride would start the third set down 2-4 but a 7-1 run highlighted by four Christ kills would bring them back 9-5. The teams would continue to trade but up 12-9 the Pride would score six unanswered, two from Stephen Marquis, to make the score 18-9. Some errors would keep Wells in the game, but an assist and kill from Edric Loh in back-to-back sets would put the Pride up 24-16. Another Martino ace would ice the set and complete the sweep as Widener would win 25-16.

The Pride will look forward to their first conference game of the season, as they come back home to face the Monarchs of King's College. First serve is Thursday, February 15 at 7pm.
