BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
The first set was tight all down the stretch, as a two-point lead was the largest either team would see early. Up 10-8, the Pride would suffer a 0-4 run, but the Pride would tie up the game with a 3-0 run highlighted by a long volley that would end in a Widener point as the score would sit at 20 each. Both teams would find themselves trading points to close out the set, and after a Spartan error the match would be tied at 25. Abigail Herrin and Lilyanna Martucci's hitting would help keep the Pride alive, but Shannon Toomey's kill would ultimately life the Pride to victory in a long 31-29 set.
-
The Pride would start slower in the second set, starting down 0-7 against the Spartans. A 0-5 run would see Widener down further, but Alex Verchio's hitting would spark a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 11-15. A resounding Martucci-led 7-1 run would see the Pride close the gap to 18-19, and a York error would tie the set at 21. The teams would trade two-point runs, and a Kristen Vacca kill would see the score tied at 24. Unfortunately, a York kill would see them take the set as the Pride would fall 25-27.
-
Widener would find themselves in a hole again in the third set, as a 0-4 run would have them down 2-6 early. The Pride would go on some three point runs in an attempt to comeback, but the Spartans would keep a firm hold of the lead. Down 15-20 late in the set, York would go on a 0-4 run as Widener would fall 17-25.
-
Like much of this match, the fourth set started extremely competitive, both teams keeping it close. A 4-1 Pride run would see them up 10-8, but the Spartans would score two straight to tie the set yet again. Kills from Verchio and Martucci would see Widener score five straight, as the first real lead of the set belonged to them at 15-10. York would tie the score at 19 as a part of a four-point run, and the two teams were headed for a dramatic finish again. Tied at 28, Vacca's kill and a York error would give the Pride a 30-28 win in an electric fourth set.
-
Widener was in a dog fight in the final set, with the score tied at 6 and both teams hungry to pull out the win. A 0-4 York run would see them up 8-10. Down 11-12, Widener would suffer a 0-3 run to lose the final set 11-15 in a heartbreaker.
