CHESTER, Pa. – In the first home conference game, the Widener Men's Basketball team picked p their first win in an 85-75 over the Stevenson Mustangs.
The 10-point win moves the Pride to 10-2 in the regular season and 1-1 in MAC Commonwealth play.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Dominic Dunn led the Pride with 20 points and eight rebounds.
- Off the bench, Mike Kane scored 13 in 13 minutes.
- Howie Rankine registered four steals and nine points.
- The Pride shot 51.8% from the field, earned 36 points in the paint, 23 points off fast breaks, and capitalized on turnovers with 21 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Anthony DiCaro got things started for the Pride to take the lead with a triple early in the half. Rankine hit a good jumper two minutes later to take the lead again. Rankine's jumper sent the Pride on an 8-0 run with points from Rankine, Luke Mazur, Kevin Schenk, and Kane. Around halfway through the Pride saw a triple from Xavier Ernest to extend the lead to seven. DiCaro and Matt Daulerio would hit back-to-back triples just under the halfway mark. The score was 24-16 in favor of the Blue and Gold. Another stretch gave the Pride a 9-2 run which was closed out by Kane's triple with four minutes left in the half. Kane closed out the scoring with a layup to go into halftime with a 47-5 lead.
- Out of half, the Pride capitalized quickly with Daulerio hitting a layup and forcing a Mustang's turnover. A long stretch of the half with only points from Daulerio gave the Mustang's a run to bring the lead within five. Ernest would push it back up with a good jumper in the paint as Kane dished an assist. Dunn added a layup, an And-1, and a triple within the course of a minute to push the lead back to double digits. With five on the clock, DiCaro hit another triple to slow the Mustang's offensive rhythm. A free throw lane violation gave Rankine another shot with just under three remaining. The final 11 points for the Pride came from free throws where they went 11-of-15. The final score was 85-75 Pride.
