Women’s Basketball Wins Third Straight, Splits Season Series with Eastern

The Pride Kept the Eagles to Single-Digit Scoring in Each of the First Three Quarters

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Widener women's basketball defeated the Eastern University Eagles on Wednesday by a final score of 58-41. In the two Widener-Eastern matchups this season, the road team was victorious.

The Pride are 16-4 in the regular season. They are 6-3 in MAC play.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jordan D'Ambrosio led the way with 24 points. For the second game in a row, she had six steals.
  • Widener won the points off turnovers battle, 29-13.
  • One-third of the Pride's 42 rebounds were on the offensive side (14).
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EASTERN
  • After a layup by Eastern, Widener had an 8-0 run to start the game. A few Pride turnovers allowed the Eagles to tie the game 8-8. Despite this, Widener utilized a 10-0 push to separate themselves from the home team. A Lindsay Kutz layup was the last bucket of the quarter. Through one, Widener was ahead 18-8.
  • For the majority of the second quarter, the Pride struggled to find the net. Eastern scored eight unanswered points to cut their deficit to two. However, with three-and-a-half minutes left in the half, the Pride got going on offense. A Kutz jumper began the run. Lia Samuels would add her second triple of the half with 1:19 remaining. In all, it was a 12-1 Pride run to end the first 20 minutes. The score was 30-17 Widener at the half.
  • The first Widener points of the second half came on a D'Ambrosio three-pointer. Under six minutes left, D'Ambrosio would contribute on both ends of the floor. She hit a jumper, stole the ball, and recorded an assist on a Mary McFillin triple. The Pride would continue their attack on the Eagles. After an Eastern bucket at 6:21, their only points for the rest of the quarter came on two free throws. Widener outscored Eastern 17-6 in the third. At the end of three, the Pride had a 47-23 advantage.
  • The home team responded with a 6-0 push to open the final 10 minutes. D'Ambrosio scored Widener's first five points, including an and-one. Both sides saw a few instances of trading quick buckets, but Widener still held a lead of around 20 points.  Although the Pride would score their last shot at 2:58, the Eagles did not have a response to cut into the deficit. Widener won 57-41.

The Pride come back to Chester on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. They will host the Hood College Blazers, and it will be the start of three consecutive home games.
