CHESTER, Pa. – Head Men's Soccer Coach
Ross Liberati announced Widener's 2023 schedule which includes seven home games on Hirschmann Field. The Pride return after a historic 11-6-2 (6-1-1 MAC Commonwealth) 2022 season.
Among the returning is all six MAC All-Conference players which include First Team MAC All-Conference
Sean Fatiga,
Ryan Van Pelt, and
Christian Vetter, Second Team MAC All-Conference
Monsif Atify, and Honorable Mention MAC All-Conference
Ryan Toporowski and
Christian Doyle. Joining the six All-Conference players are almost a dozen first years.
"We are very optimistic about this Fall" said Head Coach
Ross Liberati. "We know the team has been putting in the work during the offseason to pull off something special! We feel like last season's MAC Commonwealth Championship appearance was a step in the right direction for our program and we look forward to carrying the momentum into our 2023 campaign."
The Pride's busy month of September begins promptly on September 1 as they will play in the Swarthmore Garnet Classic which will be half hosted at Swarthmore and the other at Widener. The Pride will take on the United States Coast Guard Academy under the lights and then will host Rosemont in the second game of the tournament.
September boasts tough non-conference schedule. Coach Liberati has "once again built a very tough out of conference schedule" and looks to utilize it to "prepare for an always difficult MAC regular season play." The Pride will host Misericordia who advanced to the MAC Freedom tournament on September 26. They will turn around and host the Stevens Ducks on September 30 who made a run to the semifinals in the NCAA Division III Tournament last year.
MAC Commonwealth play begins early in October with the Pride opening with the defending champions Messiah on the 7th. Two weeks later, the Blue and Gold travel to Owings Mills, Md. to battle the former fifth seed Stevenson. Conference play concludes with another showing of the Alvernia Golden Wolves in a road trip to Reading, Pa. on October 28.
Coach Liberati analyzes conference play as "very strong with many teams returning some of their top players. With only eight teams in the conference now, it puts even more emphasis on the importance of getting results during the regular season."
The MAC Commonwealth Conference Tournament will begin on November 1 with a semifinal game and will conclude on Saturday November 4 with the championship.
