Widener Baseball Falls 2-1 in MAC Commonwealth Semifinals to Alvernia

Game 1: 6-7 | Game 2: 9-1 | Game 3: 6-7

READING, Pa. – In a three-game series to advance to the MAC Commonwealth Championships, Widener baseball came up short to end season after a game three loss.
 
After the series, the Pride conclude with a 22-19 season record and 15-9 in the MAC Commonwealth.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AT ANGELICA PARK
 
GAME 1 – SATURDAY
 
After a quick first inning, the Pride opened the scoring gates as Andrew Yates and Nick Barnez would get things started in the top of the second. Fremgen would then punch a single up the middle to bring in Yates. Another single from McCLain pushed Fremgen to second. A sac fly from Aaron Nuble would bring home Fremgen to make the score 2-0. The Pride defense stood strong until the fourth.
 
Opening the fourth was a single from Fremgen to left field. McClain hit a bomb to right center to add a triple to his stats and bring in Fremgen. Stephen Posner would then bat in McClain on a ground out to the second baseman. The score was 4-0. The bottom of the fourth saw two runs for the Golden Wolves as the Pride escaped the inning with two left on base.
 
The offense went to a halt as the Golden Wolves' defense readjusted. The Pride defense struggled as they let in three runs in the bottom of the fifth and one in the bottom of the sixth. A stretched top of the seventh saw a run from Kyle Brex as Brex doubled down the left field line to allow Justin Costanzo to bat him in and force a pitching change. As the Pride were down to the final three outs, John Aman would score for to made the deficit one. The Pride fell short as a pick off at second ended the game 6-7 in favor of the Golden Wolves.
 
GAME 2 – SUNDAY
 
In the second game of the series, the Pride were back with force. Opening the game was a quick run from Brex as he singled to get on base. A walk from Fremgen on loaded bases brought in Brex. A fast 1-2-3 bottom led to another Pride run as Nuble scored on an RBI single from Brex.
 
The Pride would go on to add two more runs in the top of the fourth. An Anthony Boccio single and stolen base set him up on second. A sac bunt from Costanzo advanced Boccio to third as the Golden Wolves made a pitching change. Boccio would score on a failed pick-off attempt and throwing error by Umans. A line drive down the left field line would score Brex as the Pride led 4-0.
 
The next at bat, McClain singled up the middle to get on base. A single from Nuble ended up earning him an extra base as McClain was thrown out at home. A throwing error from the Golden Wolves allowed Boccio to get on base and score Nuble. A single through the right side from Costanzo sent Nuble around two bags to score.
 
The Golden Wolves' first run came in the bottom of the fifth as the inning ended with a looking strikeout from Hayden O'Neill. In the top of the seventh, the Pride kept the runs coming. Another Nuble run would make the score 7-1. Xavier Ruley and Nuble would cap off the scoring summary for the Pride in the top of the ninth to walk away with a 9-1 victory to tie the series at one.
 
GAME 3 – SUNDAY
 
The tensions were high heading into the final game of the semifinal series. Opening the game was a quick two runs as an RBI single from Fremgen scored Costanzo and Boccio. In the next at bat series for the Pride, a Posner single to start the inning. A double from Boccio to score Posner. Brex would then single to move Posner to third. A fielder's choice bunt from Costanzo allowed Posner to score to make the score 4-0 after an inning and a half. The Golden Wolves answered with a run of their own in the bottom half but the inning came to an end as Friedel was caught stealing.
 
In the top of the fourth, Costanzo again would hit an RBI bunt to allow Nuble to score. The Pride were up 5-2 going into the bottom of the fourth. A quick 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth sent the Pride into the top of the fifth looking to score more. A McClain run would make the score 6-2 as Brex hit an RBI single.
 
The second half of the game the tides turned as the Pride offense struggled to bat. The Golden Wolves took advantage of the momentum shift to tie the game at six in the bottom of the seventh. A pitching change tried to minimize the damage as Aidan O'Brien came in to relieve Kyle Laing. O'Brien escaped the inning with three strikeouts.
 
O'Brien continued to keep silence the Golden Wolves with another strikeout and an additional quick 2-3 outs in the bottom of the eighth. After one hit in the top of the ninth from Fremgen the Pride offense came to an end on a strikeout. The defense stood strong until a walk off single ended the game 7-6 in favor of the Golden Wolves. The Golden Wolves would take the series two games to one.
