Widener Softball Splits with Alvernia Golden Wolves in Season Finale

Head Coach Jamie Lachall Leads the Pride to 16 Wins in Her First Season

READING, Pa. – The Pride played their final doubleheader of the season on Monday, as they visited the Alvernia University Golden Wolves. Widener took game one 2-1, but Alvernia won game two 2-0.

The Pride are 16-23 in the regular season. They are 4-11 in conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALVERNIA

Game 1

Eliana Guerrieri and Mikayla Fedele had one run each. Fedele, Jalia Lawrence, and Kaylin Johnson had two hits each. Fedele allowed seven hits and one run in seven innings on the mound.

Widener left one runner on base in the top of the first, even with Johnson grabbing a double. Although they would have two runners on base in the second, no runs were scored. The Golden Wolves put a run on the board in the bottom of the second. With bases loaded, Alvernia recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice. Widener played good defense in the third inning, logging a double play and a fly-out in four batters. After three, Alvernia led 1-0.

Both sides were earning runners in the fourth and fifth innings. But, neither were able to find a hit that would bring them in to score. The sixth inning changed that, though. With two outs, the Pride had Fedele and Guerrieri on second and third base, respectively. Caitlyn Katchur's two-run double put the Pride in the lead 2-1. Widener made sure to keep the home team scoreless in the bottom of the sixth to build on their momentum. The Pride left a runner at third base as Widener and Alvernia switched to the bottom of the seventh. Needing two runs for the win, the Golden Wolves were retired in four batters. The Pride won the first game 2-1.

Game 2

Johnson, Sam McCarthy, and Bella Walker had one hit each. Fedele, once again starting on the mound, allowed seven hits and two runs.

Even though Alvernia had two women on base in the bottom of the first, the Pride prevented any runs from scoring. As the game turned to the second inning, it was clear that pitching would once again be the deciding factor. Both teams had a single, but not much else. The Pride recorded two groundouts in the bottom of the third, and the final out was on a fly-out. The game was scoreless through three.

After getting a double play on defense in the top of the fourth, the Golden Wolves scored a run in the bottom of the inning. An RBI single made the score 1-0. The pitching duel continued through the fifth inning. Widener and Alvernia each put four batters to the plate and left one runner on base. In the sixth, the Golden Wolves extended their advantage to 2-0 on a solo home run. This would end up being the dagger, as Alvernia quickly retired the Pride in the top of the seventh. Alvernia took the second game 2-0. The Pride and the Golden Wolves split for the afternoon.
