Men's Lacrosse Picks Up Conference Win Against Hood

CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener men's lacrosse team pushed past Hood in MAC Conference match-up on the road.

This win improves the Pride's record to 5-6 and 2-1 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST HOOD

In a sunny week day game, the Pride opened slow and relied heavy on the defense to keep the score even at zeros for the first few minutes. At 11:22 on the clock, Wesley Sporer scored and got the Pride on the board. Hood was quick to answer with a goal of their own three minutes later. With three minutes remaining in the first period, Jimmy Knepp scored, unassisted, and then a minute later, Sam Heister caused a turnover that Matt Buckley picked up and took down the field for a goal. The Pride finish the period ahead, 3-1.

The second period started similarly to the first with a Wesley Sporer goal. Coming off a timeout, the Blazers found the back of the net, lessening their deficit to two goals. At 9:38, Hood scored again and the Pride sat ahead by one goal, but only for few minutes as Connor Heisman scored to add another goal to the Pride's score. With three minutes remaining in the half, the Pride and Blazers each went on to score one more goal each and the half finished with the Pride ahead, 6-4.

The Pride saw a dominate third quarter as they stopped Hood's offense and prevented them from scoring any goals. It took Widener some time to get their own offense moving, but at 7:54 on the clock, Connor Heisman scored for the Blue and Gold and then five minutes later, Sporer scored again and sent the Pride to the fourth period, ahead by four.

The Pride came out in the fourth period looking even more explosive than the period before. Nick Brennan scored for Widener 30 seconds into the period, putting the score at 9-4. Jimmy Knepp went on to score back-to-back goals, one with a Wesley Sporer assist. Hood quickly answered with a goal of their own, but then Bryant Maits and Wesley Sporer added two more goals. With 3:48 left in the game, Maits found the back of net again and Sam Haverstrom scored the final goal to finish the game with a score of 15-7.
