Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Elizabethtown Despite Three Goals from Nicholas Knepp

Knepp Saw a Season-High in Goals

CHESTER, Pa. – Although the Pride's offense once again scored in double digits, they were unable to overcome the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays. Elizabethtown won 18-10.

The Pride are 1-5 in the regular season. They have yet to see a MAC opponent.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Twenty of Widener's 30 shots were on goal.
  • Liam Montgomery picked up a team-high six ground balls.
  • Sam Heister made 14 saves in goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED AT QUICK STADIUM
Elizabethtown won the first faceoff. The Blue Jays were aggressive early with a few missed shots before putting one in the net. Five minutes later, Widener scored their first goal of the afternoon from Knepp on a man-up situation. The Pride would go on to score three more goals in a row to make the score 4-1. Knepp was responsible for two of the four goals. However, Elizabethtown bounced back to end the quarter with two goals in the final minute. There were two penalties in the quarter, one for each side. After 15 minutes, Widener was up 4-3.

The second quarter was where the game was slipping from the Pride's grasp. The Blue Jays scored eight goals. The Pride were unable to put one in the net for the entire quarter. Despite this, the Pride continued to put up shots. They had five shots and were 3-5 on clear attempts. Going into the break, Elizabethtown led 11-4.

To start the second half, both teams were sloppy on offense. Each side recorded two turnovers before the Pride finally broke through for a goal. Widener and Elizabethtown's scoring was a back-and-forth affair in the third quarter. Connor Heisman made the score 11-5 Elizabethtown. Wesley Sporer added his own goal moments later. With 10:02 left, Knepp cashed in on his third goal. For the remainder of the quarter, the two sides scored once more. But, Widener's goal was the final one. Sporer scored on a man-up opportunity. In the waning moments, Montgomery was handed an unnecessary-roughness penalty. Widener trailed 13-8 after three quarters.

Although the Pride had multiple clear attempts at the beginning of the final 15 minutes, Elizabethtown scored first. Widener would answer back not even 20 seconds later, this time from Nick Brennan. The Blue Jays led 14-9. Following a shot and a ground ball, Matt Buckley put Widener's 10th goal in the net. However, the Blue Jays converted four consecutive goals to end the game. In that stretch, the Pride got up four shots. The final score was 18-10 Blue Jays.
