Women’s Basketball Bounces Back from First Loss with Win over Immaculata

The Pride Got the Win on Saturday after Losing Last Saturday at Home

IMMACULATA, Pa. – In the first of four consecutive road games for Widener women's basketball, the Pride took a 68-60 win against the Immaculata University Mighty Macs.

The Pride are 8-1 on the season. Their first MAC game is on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Hood.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Jordan D'Ambrosio had a team-high 23 points.
  • The Pride had 12 points off turnovers.
  • Widener collected seven steals and seven blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST IMMACULATA
  • A Mia Robbins' layup started the scoring for the Pride. After a few threes from Immaculata, D'Ambrosio cashed her first triple of the afternoon. With scoring coming from multiple sources and good defense, Widener kept the Mighty Macs at a good distance. However, Immaculata hit five of their nine total triples in the first quarter alone. The two sides exchanged jumpers at the end of the quarter, but Widener held a 22-20 advantage.
  • A Mary McFillin three opened up the second quarter. Immaculata would not let Widener get too far ahead, as they took the lead back at 6:38 left in the half. Despite the Pride playing from behind in the back half of the second quarter, they kept firing away. Down by two with under a minute, McFillin's triple put the Pride back on top by one point. D'Ambrosio prevented another Immaculata score near the buzzer with a block. The score was 39-38 Widener at the half.
  • Lindsay Kutz provided the first Widener score of the third quarter in the form of a layup. With the score still being anyone's game, the two sides were not willing to relinquish any ground. Toward the end of the quarter, the Mighty Macs held a seven-point lead (52-45). However, the Pride ended the third set of 10 minutes with a quick 6-0 run. Lia Samuels drained a three, and D'Ambrosio converted an and-one attempt. Immaculata was ahead 52-51 at the end of three.
  • The run in the third quarter spilled into the fourth as well. In total, it was a 12-0 Pride run, capped off by another Samuels' triple. With two more shots from downtown by Immaculata, the home team took the lead.  Both offenses went cold until the clock was under 90 seconds left. Widener's two cornerstones, D'Ambrosio and Robbins, finished the game scoring Widener's final 11 points. Nine of those 11 came on free throws. In all, it was an 11-2 run. The final score was a 68-60 Widener win.
