Dunn’s Late Free Throws Seal a Victory for Men’s Basketball in First Game of the Cruzin’ Classic

Graduate student sees season high 10-of-11 free throws

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – A pair of free throws from Dominic Dunn with eight seconds gives Widener Men's Basketball ninth season win over Carthage.
 
A 81-78 win at Barry University for the first game of the Cruzin' Classic moves the Pride to 9-1 with a 1-1 record at neutral sites. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Dunn led the Pride with 23 points and five rebounds.
  • Howie Rankine would register four steals with 16 points and four rebounds.
  • Defensively, Kevin Schenk stole three balls and blocked a Firebirds shot.
  • Off the bench, Luke Mazur and Matt Daulerio added nine points.
  • The Pride shot 44.4% from the floor and saw 38 points in the paint and 19 off turnovers. 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride took the lead early with a 4-0 run as Dunn would score the first points of the game. Three points misses from the Firebirds would allow Rankine and Steven Matlack to extend the lead. Schenk's block came early to allow Anthony DiCaro to hit a triple forcing a Carthage timeout. Mazur would enter the game and hit back-to-back triples. The half would continue to favor the Pride as a Dunn layup pushed the lead to 10 with 8:29 remaining. As the half ended a pair of free throws from Michael Kane and a Myles Bright layup would give the Pride the largest lead of the game with 19 to head into half up 44-25.
  • Out of half, the Pride would keep the lead above 10 with a handful of points coming from free throws off Firebirds' fouls. Matlack and Dunn would cash in layups to hit the 60-point team mark. Halfway through the half, the Pride began to slow with the Firebirds pulling the lead down to three after a Matlack free throw. The Firebirds took the lead for the first time of the game with 7:26 remaining. The game would see lead changes numerous times as a triple from Mazur gave the lead back to the Blue and Gold to head into a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Pride hit a stride with a 7-0 run. Misses from the Pride would allow the game to be pulled within one as Rankine's steal would help the cause. Dunn's pair of free throws with eight seconds left gave the Pride a close 81-78 win against a receiving votes Firebirds.
