Women’s Basketball Downs the Garnet for Third Straight Win

Mia Robbins's Scorching Start to the Season Continued on Wednesday

CHESTER, Pa. – Widener women's basketball protected home court in their home opener, as they defeated the Swarthmore College Garnet, 57-48.

The Pride are 3-0 on the season. Their first MAC game is on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Hood.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Mia Robbins led the team with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Nine of her rebounds were on the offensive end.
  • The Pride collected 15 points off turnovers.
  • On defense, Widener had nine steals and six blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SWARTHMORE
  • Swarthmore started the game with a three-pointer not even 20 seconds in. The Pride, though, would counter with a small lead thanks to five quick points from Mary McFillin. Although the Garnet would tie the game up 14-14 at 2:13 left in the first, a 6-2 outburst for the Pride made the score 20-16 at the end of the first quarter. McFillin hit the last bucket on her second three-pointer.
  • Widener matched a Swarthmore shot with a 6-0 start to the second quarter. This quarter was evenly fought by both sides, as Widener and Swarthmore each scored nine points. A Jordan D'Ambrosio layup and a free throw put the Pride up nine. However, a jumper and three-pointer by the Garnet made the halftime scored 29-25.
  • Robbins got the scoring going to begin the third quarter. Continuing her strong night, she scored the first six Widener points of the half. The Pride played good defense in this quarter, as the Garnet's only source of points for the final three minutes was at the foul line. Widener would end the quarter with two Robbins' free throws. The score after three was 41-35.
  • Another Robbins' layup was the opening bucket of the fourth quarter. A 7-0 Widener push put the Swarthmore deficit into double digits. Despite converting multiple shots in the quarter, Widener kept the visitors' deficit to over 10 points. D'Ambrosio hit three free throws at the end to increase the lead, but a successful Garnet shot before the buzzer sounded made the final score 57-48.
