Jacob Kopelman and the Pride Down Misericordia on a Wet Homecoming 2023 Game

Kopelman picks up an interception and topples Cougar defense

CHESTER, Pa. – A rainy Homecoming win for Widener Football snaps two game losing streak.

The 31-27 win moves the Pride to 4-2 and 3-2 in the MAC.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pride offense tallied 267 total yards with 10 first downs.
  • Chase Diehl throws for a long 51-yard pass for 149 total yards and two touchdowns.
  • Shawn Thompson rushed for 88 yards on 28 attempts with a touchdown.
  • In the air, Jordan Baxter picked up 134 yards with a 51-yard touchdown from Diehl.
  • On defense, Colin Murt led with 10 tackles and a pass breakup.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride opened guns blazing with a 14-0 lead after the first. Malachi Stinnett stopped an advancing Cougar offense with a 22-yard pick six as the game ticked under halfway through the quarter. Baxter and Diehl picked up the second touchdown on a 51-yard dime for the only play of the drive.
  • Shawn Thompson rushed for a goal line touchdown with four minutes left to answer the two Cougar touchdowns. As time ticked under two, Ryan Pattison drilled a 47-yard field goal that bounced off the crossbar to give the Pride a 24-14 lead going into half.
  • The only points of the third came after a long defensive battle on both sides as Kopelman and the defense came away with huge hits and crucial sacks. Damique Stokes recorded a 4-yard pass to take the only points off the third.
  • With just under three left in the game, Kopelman put his shoulder down to lay the Cougar offensive player short of the first. On the same series Kopelman snagged an interception at the WID 9 to give the Pride the ball on the WID24. A final series for the Cougars ended in a final touchdown to push the score to four, but it wasn't enough for the Cougars as the Pride forced three timeouts on the previous series.
