Men’s Basketball Falls to Mary Washington on the Road

Schenk leads the Pride with 17 points

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Widener men's basketball team traveled to Fredericksburg, Va. to take on the Mary Washington Eagles, but came up short with an 83-66 loss. 

The Pride is now 12-7 on the season and 6-4 in conference play. 

BY THE NUMBERS 

  • Kevin Schenk led the Pride with 17 points. Luke Mazur and Pat Holden followed, each chipping in eleven a piece.
  • Widener shot 44% from the floor and scored 20 points in the paint.
  • Defensively, Kenny Lewis grabbed nine rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot. 

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MARY WASHINGTON 

The Pride got on the board early due to a good jumper by Schenk forty seconds into first half and from there the shots started to fire and the Pride and Eagles went back and forth. Schenk contributed four more points with 17 minutes on the clock. This was the only time the Pride was within two points of the Eagles as Mary Washington went on to score off a few good jumpers and a dunk with thirteen minutes on the clock and the score sitting at 8-15 in favor of the Eagles. A good three-pointer by Mazur lessened the gap 11-15. The Pride cruised at 16 points for two minutes and both teams saw a dry spell in scoring from 4:17 on the clock to 0:44 remaining in the half. The Eagles broke the drought with a good layup and the score sat at 37-20 in favor of the Eagles after one last good three-pointer. The Pride finished out the half trailing by 17. 

The Pride opened the half with a three-pointer from Holden, which answered an Eagle's three. A steal by Matlack turned into two points for Lewis in the paint but the Pride was down by 18 with 17:16 remaining in the game. The Eagles saw their biggest lead of the game with 16:01 on the clock after a good driving layup by Dashawn Cook put the score gap at 22 points. Mazur got hot and hit three back-to-back shots in the span of two minutes. A stolen ball by Holden put him at the line where he scores both free-throw attempts. The free-throw attempts closed the score gap down to 14 and put the score at 62-48. The Pride went in to score sixteen points to finish the game and shot 56% from the floor and 36% from the arch. The Pride scored 20 points off the bench and 19 off turnovers.

The Pride travels to Frederick, Md. to take on MAC Commonwealth opponent Stevenson on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
