Matthew Christ of men's volleyball earned his season high in kills with 13 to take down the Valley Forge Patriots in a sweep on Thursday.
Following the victory on the home court, the Pride advance to 2-0 with the first two MAC games set to come on February 9.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST VALLEY FORGE
Widener senior
Josh Matchett had another strong game serving out assists. He recorded 36 dimes, his second consecutive game of the year with 30+ assists. First year
Benjamin Heist led the Pride with nine digs, while Matchett followed right behind with five of his own. The Pride collected 44 kills in 78 attacks and had a .385 hitting percentage.
In the first set,
Matthew Christ and
Dylan Beer add a kill each to counter the early tight points. While the Patriots took advantage of Widener service errors and attack errors but were met with a 9-1 Pride run in the middle of the set to make the score 22-12 Widener. A block by Christ awarded the set win to the Pride 25-14.
The Pride were able to pounce in the second set, as they quickly added six to the scoreboard. Later, as they were leading 9-2, Widener allowed four straight Valley Forge points before answering with another 6-0 run. The Pride's aggressive offense in the second set kept the Patriots from scoring. It was the visitors' lowest-scoring set of the three. Widener walked away with a 25-11 win in set two.
As the final set was underway, the Pride got their first points off a
Nick Poulson kill. Matchett recorded one of his 36 assists on the play. Down 9-6, the Pride answered back with kills by Christ and Poulson, as well as a bad set from the Patriots. The two sides fought hard until the very end, but a 10-3 outburst sealed the victory for the Pride. The Blue and Gold walked away with a 25-19 victory in the third set to end the match 3-0.

Widener has a home tri-match on Saturday afternoon. They will first take on the Baruch Bearcats, with first serve being set for noon. At 4 p.m., the Pride will welcome the Eastern Mennonite Royals to Schwartz Athletic Center.
