CHESTER, Pa. – Head Baseball Coach
Kevin Burdick announced Widener's 2023 schedule which includes 11 home ballgames. The Pride are returning from a 21-20 (9-7 MAC Commonwealth) season and return 7-of-9 starters. Among the returning starters is All-American
Justin Costanzo, All Region
Anthony Boccio, and First Team MAC All-Conference
Bryce Fremgen.
The 2023 schedule features a full line up against the nine MAC Commonwealth members and a handful of high-level teams. "We set ourselves up to have another very strong strength of schedule. Our first five games are against nationally top 25 teams from the 2022 season," Burdick said. "Being able to play the national runner up Salisbury and national powerhouse SUNY Cortland on the same day will be a challenge, but we look forward to seeing how our program matches up. A new wrinkle to our schedule is two conference cross-over opponents (Delaware Valley and Stevens) and we are excited about the challenge ahead."
Widener will begin their 2023 schedule on the road against Kean on February 9
and then will then make rounds to Shenandoah and Salisbury. While at Salisbury, the Pride will also face SUNY Cortland.
March begins a long campaign with 19 games on the diamond. The Pride have their home debut scheduled for March 3
against non-conference Washington College and return home a week later against conference opponent Stevenson. Later in the month, the men matchup against MAC Commonwealth Alvernia and Messiah in three games apiece.
Heading into April, the team begins a string of MAC Commonwealth games which feature conference champion Lebanon Valley on April 14
and 15. Two weeks later, the Blue and Gold conclude the regular season against conference runner up York on April 28
and 29
before they head into postgame play.
As far as conference play, Burdick analyzes the MAC Commonwealth as "a grind while it continues to get better each and every season." Burdick expects to "compete at the top of the conference with the goal each year to win the conference and secure a bid to the NCAA Regionals. Getting through our Conference will be our biggest test and we will be prepared!"
MAC Commonwealth tournament is set for a May 2
start and a May 13
championship game.
