Women’s Volleyball Battles Hard Against York

Pride sends Spartans to fifth set before dropping match

CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener University women's volleyball team almost notched its first win of the season on Tuesday night, as the Pride rallied to win two sets before falling to York in five sets in MAC Commonwealth play at Schwartz Athletic Center.

With the loss, the Pride fell to 0-2 in MAC Commonwealth matches and 0-8 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST YORK
  • After dropping the first two sets to the Spartans by 25-16 and 25-18 counts, the Pride began their comeback by coming away with a gutsy 26-24 win in the third game. With the Spartans leading, 23-22, the Pride won four of the last five points to take the game after Abigail Herrin notched a kill, York made two errors, and Shannon Toomey won the game with a kill.
  • In the fourth set, the Pride posted a 25-23 victory after winning the final two points of the game on a York service error and a kill from Isabella Ricevuto.
  • Unfortunately, the Pride could not come away with the win against one of the conference's top teams after the Spartans won the third set, 15-8. York improved to 6-1 on the year and 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth play.
  • Toomey led the Pride with 12 kills. Emily Miller added nine in the defeat.
  • Megan Barthol dished out 25 assists to pace the Pride in that category.
  • Rachel DiCarlo had a day on the defensive end, making a career-high 20 digs. Shelby Motz added 10 digs as well for the Pride.
 
UP NEXT
Widener goes back on the road on Friday and Saturday to face Ursinus, Moravian and Galludet in the Knights Invitational at Neumann.. The Pride open with Ursinus at 4 p.m. Friday, then will take on Moravian at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Widener will face Gallaudet at noon.
