GLASSBORO, N.J. - The Widener University women's volleyball team competed in a pair of matches against Rowan and Catholic on Saturday, but could not pick up its first victory of the season against them.
The Pride lost to undefeated Rowan, 25-16, 25-22, 25-23, in their first match. In the second one, the Pride almost picked up their first win of the season, but fell to Catholic in five sets, 32-30, 17-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-12.
The pair of defeats put Widener at 0-7 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST CATHOLIC
- The Pride opened the match by scoring the most points they have had in a set this season. Trailing, 24-22, the Pride managed to force the game to go into a win-by-two situation after earning two straight points on a pair of errors by Rowan. After both teams kept exchanging points until it was tied at 30, the Pride won the set by receiving one of their team-high 13 kills from Abigail Herrin and scoring off a Rowan attack error.
- After dropping the second set, the Pride won the third game by breaking a 20-all tie by winning the final five points of the game. Emily Miller had two aces and Shannon Toomey had a kill during that stretch.
- Unfortunately, Catholic won the fourth set and came away victorious in the final set to pick up the win over Widener.
- Toomey led the Pride with 11 kills. Miller added 10 kills and a team-high three aces, and Lilyanna Martucci made 10 kills as well for Widener.
- Megan Barthol had the best game of her career as a setter, handing out 44 assists. The junior's previous career best was 31 assists.
- Barthol and Rachel DiCarlo stood out defensively, posting 16 digs apiece for the Pride. Liz Barnes added 10 digs for the Pride.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ROWAN
- The Pride battled hard against the Profs, which improved to 6-0 on the year with the win. The Pride's best performances were in the second and third sets, where they were tied at 21 in both games before Rowan eventually won both.
- Martucci paced the Pride with 12 kills. Barnes added nine kills and a team-high two aces for Widener.
- Barthol led Widener with 24 assists.
- DiCarlo had 12 digs for the Pride on the defensive end.

Widener will host MAC Commonwealth foe York in its home opener on Tuesday. Match is set for 7 p.m.
