Football Rallies Past Hampden-Sydney for First Win

Pride overcome 10-point deficit in fourth quarter; Thompson has big day on ground

HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. – The Widener University football team scored two touchdowns in the final five and a half minutes in the fourth quarter to overcome a 10-point deficit and pull out a 31-27 victory over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday afternoon at Lewis C. Everett Stadium for its first win of the season.
 
The victory put the Pride at 1-1 on the season. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST HAMPDEN-SYDNEY
  • Trailing, 27-17, the Pride cut the Tigers' lead to three with 5:30 left after Jeff Chaplin found Ty Holbert for a 6-yard touchdown. The touchdown capped an 18-play, 70-yard drive, with Chaplin completing 6-of-9 passes for 42 yards.
  • Then with 37 seconds left, the Pride marched down the field 67 yards on 13 plays and scored the go-ahead TD after Chaplin fired a 16-yard score to Jordan Baxter. From there, the Pride's prevented the Tigers from making one last rally on the ensuing drive by forcing three incompletions following a Hampden-Sydney first down and Cade Brennan making a sack for a 4-yard loss to end the game.
  • Before the comeback, the Pride and the Tigers were in a back-and-forth battle. In the first quarter, the Tigers scored on a 74-yard touchdown pass to open the game, but the Pride bounced back with a 1-yard TD run from Shawn Thompson on the ensuing drive. The touchdown was set up by Thompson, who had a 60-yard run during the drive.
  • After Hampden-Sydney scored another touchdown to end the first quarter, the Blue and Gold tied the game at 14 with 3:53 remaining in the second after Thompson bolted for a 22-yard TD run. 
  • In the third quarter, the Pride took a 17-14 lead with 7:49 remaining after Ryan Pattison kicked a 20-yard field goal to cap a 15-play, 72-yard drive. However, Hampden-Sydney scored a touchdown four minutes later to take a 21-17 lead. In the fourth, the Tigers added another touchdown with 14:29 left before the Pride began their late rally.
By The Numbers
  • Thompson had a big day on the ground, rushing for a career-high 152 yards on a career-best 27 carries. The senior running back also matched his career high in touchdowns with two.
  • Chaplin bounced back from his first game with the Pride by completing 19-of-32 passes for 184 yards to go along with the two fourth-quarter TDs he threw. The sophomore also rushed for 42 yards on four carries.
  • Holbert led the Pride with four receptions and had 47 yards. Jack Fiucci and Matt Kain, Jr. each had four receptions for Widener as well.
  • Kevin Davis and Michael Schoenleber led the Pride defense with nine tackles apiece. Brennan and Dom D'Alessio made an impact on the defensive line, as they each had 1.5 sacks in the game.

Widener travels to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. next Saturday to face Wilkes in its first Middle Atlantic Conference game of the season. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m..
