CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener field hockey team began its 51
st season in program history on Thursday against local rival Swarthmore, but the Garnet spoiled the Pride's opener by posting a 3-1 win at Edith R. Dixon Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SWARTHMORE
- The Pride had a tough time establishing momentum on offense, as Swarthmore outshot them by a 14-2 count in the contest. The Garnet managed to score a goal in each of the first two periods to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
- In the third period, the Garnet put in their final goal of the game with 6:31 remaining in the period. However, the Pride cut the deficit back to two less than two minutes later after senior Bryn Marcavage scored on a rebound following a Maddie Hoyer shot that was initially blocked during a penalty corner.
- First-year Lilly Rejrat made eight saves in her debut as a goalie for the Pride.The Nicholson, Pa. native stopped seven of Swarthmore's 10 shots in the second half.
