CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener women's lacrosse team played hard against Messiah, but the Falcons used a five-goal third quarter to overcome a one-goal halftime deficit and win, 14-10, in a battle of unbeaten teams in MAC Commonwealth play on Saturday afternoon at Edith R. Dixon Field.
With the loss, the Pride dropped to 7-5 on the season and 2-1 in MAC Commonwealth games. Messiah improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MESSIAH
- The Pride managed to overcome a 5-2 hole to tie the game after the first quarter. The Pride scored three straight goals in the final 2:44 of the period, as Katie Ward, Annalee Doyle, and Jamie DeHaven each fired in a goal. Clark Trowbridge assisted on Ward's goal and Doyle's score.
- In the second quarter, the Pride scored three goals in the first 8:26 of the period to take an 8-5 lead. DeHaven flung in two goals and Gab Cohen scored one in the period. However, the Falcons scored two goals to cut the Pride's lead to 8-7 at halftime.
- In the third quarter, the Falcons found the back of the net five times to take a 12-8 lead.
- In the fourth, the Pride got the deficit down to three twice after Cohen scored to make it 12-9 and Trowbridge scored to make it 13-10. However, the Falcons added one more goal to seal the win.
- DeHaven led the Pride with her second career hat trick. Trowbridge paced the Pride with four points after handing out three assists to go with her goal.
- Defensively, Maddie Medve had a strong game in goal, matching her career high in saves with 18.
