CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener women's lacrosse team put together a three-goal second quarter and quality defense in the second half to push past Albright, 6-5, in MAC Commonwealth action on Wednesday night at Edith R. Dixon Field.
With the win, the Pride improved to 8-5 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. The Pride are currently in a three-way tie for third in the MAC Commonwealth standings with Lebanon Valley and Stevenson.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALBRIGHT
- With the game tied at 1 through the first quarter, the Pride managed to find the back of the net three times in the second, with the second and third goals happening within 27 seconds of each other, to take a 4-2 halftime lead. Gab Cohen broke a 2-2 tie by scoring off a free position shot with 2:35 left, then Katie Ward put the Pride ahead by two after scoring off a pass from Cohen 27 seconds later. - Widener increased its advantage to 6-3 with 9:30 left in the fourth quarter after Ward scored a man-up goal in the third period and Amber Bretz flung in a goal in the fourth.
- From there, the Pride saw goalie Maddie Medve and the defense stave off Albright's offense after it scored two goals by not allowing them to score the game-tying goal in the final 4:45 of the game. Medve made 17 saves on the day, including a save on a free position shot with 41 seconds left to seal the win. Medve leads the MAC in save percentages with .597 after totaling 142 saves on the year.
- Ward and Bretz led the Pride with two goals apiece. Bretz also had a team-high six draw controls in the victory.
