SCRANTON, Pa. – The Widener women's lacrosse team battled hard against Scranton, but it got down early and its fourth-quarter rally was not enough to beat the Royals as it dropped a 10-8 contest Wednesday night at Weiss Field.
With the loss, the Pride dropped to 7-4 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SCRANTON
- The Pride went back and forth with the Royals in the first quarter, as they were tied at 2. The Pride held a 2-1 lead after Katie Ward and Gab Cohen each scored a goal, but the Royals knotted it up with 1:16 left.
- Then, the Royals outscored the Pride, 6-1, over the next two quarters to take an 8-3 lead.
- In the fourth quarter after the Royals added two more goals to take a 10-3 advantage, the Pride attempted a late comeback, scoring five straight goals to cut the deficit to two with 4:54 left. However, Widener could not get any more shots on goal for the rest of the game.
- Amber Bretz led the Pride, scoring three goals, all of which came in the fourth quarter. The senior midfielder also paced the Pride with two assists, one of which came in the fourth quarter, and five draw controls.
- Ward and Cohen added two goals apiece and Catherine Scott had one goal for Widener.
- Defensively, Maddie Medve made 10 saves and had five ground balls in the defeat.
