CHESTER, Pa. –
Justin Costanzo blasted two home runs to lead the Widener baseball team to a 11-8 victory over Lebanon Valley in its MAC Commonwealth contest Tuesday afternoon at the Widener University baseball field.
With the win, the Pride improved to 11-13 on the season and 3-2 in MAC Commonwealth play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST LEBANON VALLEY
- The Pride jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, with Costanzo hitting a two-run blast over the huge fence in left field to cap the inning. Anthony Boccio had an RBI single and scored on an Austin Oliver groundout in the inning.
- After the Dutchmen took a 5-4 lead by scoring four runs in the second and one run in the fourth, the Pride tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning after Jason Morgan had an RBI single down the third base line to bring home Matt Samson.
- Then in the sixth, the Pride broke the tie by scoring three runs in the fifth after Bryce Fremgen scored the go-ahead run on a Samson groundout and Nick Barenz hit a two-run single to right-center field to take an 8-5 lead.
- In the next inning, Costanzo highlighted a three-run frame by smacking a two-run shot to left-center field to push the Blue and Gold's advantage to 11-5. Kyle Brex also scored a run in the inning after Oliver grounded into a double play.
- Costanzo led the Pride at the dish, going 3-for-4 with his two homers, four RBIs, and three runs scored. The junior designated hitter's two homers put him in the lead in the MAC Commonwealth in home runs with eight.
- Zachary Coluccio picked up the win after being a workhorse on the hill. The first-year right-hander threw 8 1./3 innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits while striking out six on 122 pitches.
- Kyle Laing earned the save on the mound after getting the final two batters out of the game.
