FREDERICK, Md. – Amber Bretz scored a game-high five goals and broke the all-time draw controls record while leading the Widener women's lacrosse team to a 13-7 victory over Hood in their MAC Commonwealth game at Thomas Athletic Field.
With the win, the Pride improved to 7-3 on the season and 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth play. The victory also marked the first time the Pride started 2-0 in conference play since 2010, when they won four straight to start that season.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST HOOD
- Bretz became Widener's all-time leader in draw controls after totaling nine draw controls to put her at 205 for her career. The senior from Scotch Plains, N.J., who has 45 draw controls on the season, surpassed the previous record of 201 by Calina Walz, who held the mark since 2011.
- The Pride used strong starts in the first and third quarters to take down Hood. The Pride jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter. Then after the Blazers cut their lead to 6-5 at halftime, the Pride scored five goals in the third quarter to take an 11-6 lead to cruise to the win.
- Bretz played a big part in those two quarters, scoring four goals after netting two goals in the first period and flinging in two in the third. Bretz's other goal in the second period. The midfielder now has 13 hat tricks in her career and three games in which she has scored five goals.
- Katie Ward added four goals and Gab Cohen tallied a hat trick for Widener in the win. Cohen notched her 11th hat trick of her career, while Ward had her seventh hat trick of her career.
- Defensively, Maddie Medve made 10 saves to pick up the win in goal. Grace Lindberger led the team with three caused turnovers.
