CHESTER, Pa.-
Matt Samson went a perfect 3-for-3 with a grand slam, five RBIs and four runs scored while leading the Widener baseball team to a convincing 19-5 win over Albright in its MAC Commonwealth game Tuesday at the Widener University baseball field.
With the win, the Pride improved to 17-14 on the season and are 6-3 in MAC Commonwealth play.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ALBRIGHT
- After allowing two runs in the top of the first tinning, the Pride struck back with six in the bottom half to take a 6-2 lead. Stephen Posner hit a two-run double, Justin Costanzo had an RBI double, and Samson and Bryce Fremgen each had an RBI single in the inning.
- Then, the Pride pushed across four runs in the second to take a 10-2 lead. Austin Oliver had a two-run single and scored on a passed ball, and Nick Barenz brought home a run on sacrifice fly in the inning.
- After the Lions scored two runs in the top of the third, Oliver smacked another two-run single and Anthony Boccio had an RBI single in the bottom of the third to help the Blue and Gold take a 13-4 advantage.
- In the fourth, Samson took the Lions deep to right field for the second grand slam of his career. Then, Nick Barenz knocked in a run on a single to make it 18-4 Widener.
- The Pride received their final run in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Posner.
- With his perfect day at the plate, Samson raised his batting average to .466, which leads the MAC Commonwealth. The junior right fielder also ranks second in the conference in OPS (1.305), second in on-base percentage (.552), and third in slugging percentage (.753).
- Boccio and Fremgen also had three hits and Oliver tallied two for the Pride in the win.
- Sean Curran earned the win on the mound after allowing only two earned runs on four hits in four innings of relief for Widener.
