CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener baseball team overcame a five-run deficit to earn a 10-8 victory over Eastern in its MAC Commonwealth home opener Friday afternoon at the Widener University baseball field.
With the win, the Pride improved to 10-11 on the season and 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth play. The Blue and Gold also improved to 2-0 in MAC Commonwealth play after sweeping the first conference series of the year against Eastern.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EASTERN
- Trailing, 8-3, through the top of the fourth inning, the Pride cut the Eagles' lead to two by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Aaron Nuble scored on a Nick Barenz sacrifice fly, Jason Morgan had an RBI single and Brandon Robinson scored after stealing home on a double steal attempt.
- Then, the Pride took their 10-8 lead by scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Morgan had an RBI triple, Justin Costanzo hit the game-tying RBI double and scored the go-ahead run on a Bryce Fremgen sacrifice fly, and Austin Oliver tacked on the insurance run on an error.
- From there, reliever Kyle Laing kept the Eagles at bay by throwing three scoreless innings to complete the comeback win.
- Morgan finished the game going 3-for-5 with a single, double and triple, and four RBIs. Kyle Brex also went 3-for-5 for Widener and Nuble had two hits for the Pride in the win.
- Robinson scored three runs to lead the Pride after reaching with a single and on two hit by pitches.
- Laing picked up his first win after throwing 3 2/3 innings in relief. The senior right-handed allowed only one hit and struck out five.

The Pride will hit the road Saturday to face York in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader. The first game will begin at noon, followed by the second game at 3 p.m.
