CHESTER, Pa. - The Widener baseball team earned a pair of wins over a tough Scranton team in exciting fashion on Saturday afternoon at the Widener University baseball field.
In the first game, the Pride saw
Andrew Yates smack a pinch-hit two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift them to an 8-7 win. In the nightcap, the Pride came away with a 10-4 victory after scoring six runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Royals.
The Pride are now 14-13 on the season and are on four-game winning streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SCRANTON IN GAME 1
- Trailing, 7-3, through the top of the seventh, the Pride scored three runs to cut the Royals' lead to one after Jason Morgan, Nick Barenz and Kyle Brex scored on two fielding errors.
- Then, Yates came to the plate and blasted his walk-off two-run shot over the right-center field fence to deliver the dramatic win.
- Kyle Brex led the Pride at the dish, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Bryce Fremgen added two hits, while Anthony Boccio and Brandon Robinsoneach had an RBI single in the win.
- Justin Costanzo hit a solo homer in the first inning to give him his 10th homer of the season. The junior designated hitter leads the MAC Commonwealth in homers.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SCRANTON IN GAME 2
- Clinging to a 4-3 lead, the Pride pushed across six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-3 lead after Austin Oliver hit a two-run double, Robinson had an RBI single, Stephen Posner followed with an RBI single, and Boccio hit a two-run single.
- Oliver paced the Pride at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run scored after also bringing home a run on a groundout in the third inning. Boccio and Robinson also had two hits in the win.
- Costanzo went 1-for-3 with an RBI single, two runs scored and two walks. Costanzo leads the MAC Commonwealth in slugging percentage (.813), on-base percentage (.545), and OPS (1.358).
- Pitcher Sean Curran earned a complete-game victory for Widener on the hill, allowing only four earned runs on seven hits while striking out five.
