ST. DAVIDS, Pa. –
Matt Samson surpassed 100 hits for his career while leading the Widener baseball team to a convincing 16-2 victory over Eastern in its MAC Commonwealth opener Tuesday afternoon at Eastern University.
With the win, the Pride improved to 9-11 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST EASTERN
- Samson became the latest Widener player to reach the century mark in hits after going a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with three doubles, one RBI, three runs scored, and one walk. The Coatesville, Pa. native now has 103 hits for his career.
- The Pride pushed across 15 of their 16 runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings, respectively. The biggest offensive output occurred in the third inning, when they scored eight runs. Justin Costanzo hit a two-run home run, Jason Morgan hit a two-run double, Samson, Brandon Robinson and Bryce Fremgen each had an RBI double, and Nick Barenz had a sacrifice fly that scored Aaron Nuble in the inning.
- Morgan finished the game going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and a stolen base. Fremgen, Nuble and Robinson had two hits apiece as well for the Blue and Gold.
- The Pride had a season-high 18 hits as a team. They also had 10 players record a hit in the game: Samson, Morgan, Fremgen, Nuble, Robinson, Costanzo, Barenz, Austin Oliver, Brandon Reis, and Xavier Ruley.
- First-year starter Zachary Coluccio earned the victory on the mound after allowing only five hits while fanning nine in seven shutout innings.
