CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Widener baseball team came away with a split against Washington College in their non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Athey Park.
The Pride lost the first game, 14-9, but rebounded with a 14-13 victory in the nightcap. The Pride are now 8-11 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST WASHINGTON COLLEGE IN GAME 2
- The Pride jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Austin Oliver hit a two-run single, Bryce Fremgen drew a walk with the bases loaded to push across a run, and Oliver scored on a wild pitch.
- After the Shoremen came back to take a 5-4 lead in the second inning, the Pride put together a five-run rally in the fourth to grab a 9-5 advantage. Anthony Boccio had an RBI single, and scored a run on a Justin Costanzo sacrifice fly, Kyle Brex stole home plate, and Oliver scored on another wild pitch in the inning.
- After the Shoremen scored a run in the fifth, Widener pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth to go ahead 11-6. Costanzo scored on an error and Aaron Nuble came home on a Brex fielder's choice.
- However, the Shoremen managed to cut the Pride's lead to one after scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
- In the top of the eighth, the Pride extended the lead to 14-10 after Brex drew a walk with the bases loaded and Jason Morgan hit a two-run single.
- Though the Shoremen cut their lead to one by scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth, the Pride put the game away in the ninth after Joey Norton threw a scoreless inning to record the save.
- Costanzo and Morgan led the Pride at the dish with two hits apiece. Fremgen drew four walks, while Nuble and Brex had three walks apiece.
- Matt Samson is now one hit away from notching his 100th career hit for the Pride after going 1-for-3 in the game.
- Aidan O'Brien earned the win on the mound in relief after pitching four innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST WASHINGTON COLLEGE IN GAME 1
- The Pride held a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Brex scored on an Oliver sacrifice fly. However, the Pride gave up five runs in the bottom half to fall into a 5-1 deficit.
- The Pride managed to take a 6-5 lead after scoring four runs in the third and one run in the fourth. Oliver hit a two-run double and scored on an error, and Nuble hit an RBI double in the third. In the fourth, Gabe Franczyk scored the go-ahead run on a Boccio groundout.
- Unfortunately, the Shoremen took a 9-6 lead after scoring a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
- The Pride managed to cut the deficit to one in the sixth after Andrew Yates hit an RBI double, then scored on a Morgan groundout.
- Ultimately, the Shoremen pulled away with a five-run seventh inning to earn the win.
- Brex led the Pride at the plate, going 3-for-4. Nuble also had two hits for the Blue and Gold in the defeat.

The Pride will hit the road again on Tuesday when they play Eastern in their first MAC Commonwealth game of the season. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
