CHESTER, Pa. – The Widener baseball team scored eight runs in the second inning and rode that momentum to a 13-8 victory over Swarthmore in its home opener Friday afternoon at the Widener University baseball field.
With the win, the Pride improved to 6-7 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST SWARTHMORE
- After a scoreless first inning, the Pride pushed across their eight runs on seven hits and one error. The Pride sent 13 players to the plate in the inning.
- Bryce Fremgen scored the game's first run on a passed ball with the bases loaded, then Justin Costanzo scored two batters later after Gabe Franczyk was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced. Then, Jason Morgan hit an RBI single with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 3-0.
- In the next at-bat, Kyle Brex broke the game open with a bases-clearing double to left-center field to make it a 6-0 advantage for the Pride. Anthony Boccio followed Brex by hitting a single to bring him home, then Costanzo came up to bat again and drove in Boccio for the eighth run of the frame.
- Though the Garnet scored a pair of runs in the third inning, two more in the fifth and two more in the sixth, the Pride scored four runs during that span to make it a 12-6 lead. Boccio scored a run in the fourth on a Fremgen fielder's choice, Matt Samson hit a solo home run in the fifth, and Aaron Nuble hit a two-run single in the sixth.
- The Pride received their final run of the game in the eighth after Boccio doubled and scored following an errant throw by Swarthmore.
- Boccio led the Pride at the plate, going 4-for-5 with his double and four runs scored. Costanzo was a perfect 3-for-3 with one RBI, two walks and one run scored. Nuble and Matt Samson each had a pair of hits in the win.
- Liam Nihill picked up the win on the hill after allowing only three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Joey Norton led the Pride in strikeouts, fanning five in 1 2/3 innings pitched in relief.
