Baseball Takes Two Against Milwaukee School of Engineering

Nuble’s walk-off HR leads to Game 1 win; Fremgen’s three hits, six RBIs deliver Game 2 victory

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The Widener baseball team came away with two more victories during its third day at the RussMatt Invitational, as it swept the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Tuesday at NorthEast Regional Park. 

The Pride rallied to win the first game, 5-4, in eight innings on a walk-off home run by Aaron Nuble, then took the nightcap by a 15-6 count. The pair of wins put the Pride at 5-6 on the year. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MILWAUKEE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING IN GAME 1 
  • Down, 4-0, the Pride managed to force extra innings after scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh after Anthony Boccio blasted a two-run home run and Matt Samson hit a two-run double. 
  • In the eighth, Nuble hit a solo shot over the left field fence to seal the victory for the Pride. The homer was the junior infielder's first one of his career. 
  • Bryce Fremgen, Jason Morgan and Tommy McParland also each had a hit for Widener. 
  • Joey Norton earned the win in relief after throwing one scoreless inning in which he yielded only one hit while striking out one. 
HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MILWAUKEE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING IN GAME 2 
  • After a scoreless first inning, the Pride broke out the bats by driving in six runs in the top of the second. The Pride scored their first three runs on two wild pitches and a passed ball, then saw Kyle Brex follow with a RBI double, Boccio brought him home on a single, and Fremgen knock in Boccio on a double. 
  • After MSOE scored a run in the bottom of the second, Widener added four runs in the fourth inning, with Fremgen capping the inning with a three-run homer, to make it 10-1. 
  • The Blue and Gold added one run in the sixth, then pushed across four more in the seventh after Fremgen smacked a two-run single and Justin Costanzo hit a two-run double. 
  • Fremgen led the Pride at the dish, going 3-for-5 with his homer, double, six RBIs and two runs scored. Boccio also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored. 
  • Costanzo also had a multi-hit game for Widener, going 2-for-4 with his double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Brex and Morgan also scored three runs apiece for the Pride. 
  • Austin Oliver picked up his first collegiate win on the hill after pitching 3 2/3 innings for Widener. 
UP NEXT  
The Pride will face Chatham on Wednesday in the final game of their spring break trip in Davenport Fla. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m.
